A new year means new movies to look forward to! A new Quentin Tarantino movie is an event movie. It is something that people are going to anticipate, watch and discuss. SHIRLEY

DIRECTOR : JOSEPHINE DECKER

CAST : ELISABETH MOSS, MICHAEL STUHLBARG,

ODESSA YOUNG, LOGAN LERMAN

The breakout director of 2018 for me was Josephine Decker who gave us the superb Madeline’s Madeline. Decker has already been busy with her next project Shirley, which will be an experimental biopic of novelist Shirley Jackson. The queen of television, Elisabeth Moss may become the queen of cinema in 2019. This film will be one of five major films that she will star in during the course of 2019. Her co-star here will be the always charming Michael Stuhlbarg.

"The Great Gatsby." According to Tom Breen, the owner of property "Breenhold" in the Blue Mountains where a lot of filming took place, there was a huge stuff-up on set by a "private weather guru" who was hired by Baz Luhrmann. Mr Breen claims that on a beautiful spring day, the crew purchased 100,000 litres of water from one of the dams to create the synthetic rain needed for the scene where a nervous Gatsby has Nick Carroway invite Daisy over for tea. It rained for the next 3 days.

SORRY WE MISSED YOU

DIRECTOR : KEN LOACH

CAST : KRIS HITCHEN, DEBBIE HONEYWOOD, KATIE PROCTOR, RHYS STONE

I have lost interest in many veteran filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and Terrence Malick but I will continue to watch every film that Ken Loach puts out. I honestly don’t think he has made a bad film in his entire fifty year plus career. His new film will as usual focus on a working class character, this time a man who becomes a self-employed delivery driver in the hope of finding some form of independence in the current economic climate.

THE HIGH GROUND

DIRECTOR : STEPHEN JOHNSON

CAST : SIMON BAKER, CALLAN MULVEY, JACK THOMPSON, AARON PEDERSON

Stephen Johnson, who directed many of Yothu Yindi’s music videos, as well as the exuberant Yolngu Boy (2001) has been filming this interesting thriller about frontier Australia. Simon Baker may be an international star but he recently pointed out that Breathe (2018), the recent surfing movie that he directed was the first Australian film he had ever been in. He will star in this film alongside the legendary Jack Thompson.

"The Terminator." Arnold Schwarzenegger worked with guns every day for a month to prepare for the role. The first two weeks of filming he practiced weapons stripping and reassembly blindfolded until the motions were automatic, like a machine. He spent hours at the shooting range and practicing with different weapons without blinking or looking at them when reloading or cocking. He also had to be ambidextrous.

THE LAST THING HE WANTED

DIRECTOR : DEE REES

CAST : ANNE HATHAWAY, WILLEM DAFOE, BEN AFFLECK

One of the best ensemble films in recent years was Mudbound (2017) from Dee Rees and this will be her eagerly awaited follow up film. Based on the novel by Joan Didion, the film concerns a journalist (Anne Hathaway) who is covering the the 1984 presidential election. She has to take leave of her coverage to care for her dying father (Willem Dafoe). The film has been described as a political thriller and will be distributed by Netflix.

THE TRUTH

DIRECTOR : HIROKAZU KORE-EDA

CAST : CATHERINE DENEUVE, JULIETTE BINOCHE, ETHAN HAWKE

In 2018, Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda won the Palme d’Or with his family drama Shoplifters. The success of this film has given him the chance to make a film set in France, with French screen legends Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche, as well as Hollywood star Ethan Hawke. Deneuve will star as an actress who has just released her memoirs and finds herself reunited with her daughter (Binoche) and son-in-law (Hawke).

American Psycho Was Inspired by Tom Cruise. Christian Bale explained that he drew inspiration from a Cruise interview on David Letterman’s show, in which he was struck by the star’s “very intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes,” as American Psycho‘s director, Mary Harron, put it.

TRIANGLE OF SADNESS

DIRECTOR : RUBEN OSTLUND

CAST : TBA

Another filmmaker following up a Palme d’Or winning film is Ruben Ostlund who wowed audiences with his satire The Square (2016). His latest film will also be a satire this time centred around the modelling industry. Ostlund says the film title refers to a “ term used by plastic surgeons to fix a wrinkle between the eyes with Botox in 15 minutes. ” Two models, one male and one female, deal with their fading looks in a tough economic climate.

UNCUT GEMS

DIRECTORS : BEN & JOSH SAFDIE

CAST : ADAM SANDLER, LAKEITH STANFIELD, IDINA MENZEL

The Safdie brothers have been making waves on the independent scene for some time but there previous film Good Time (2016) was a huge breakthrough and one of the best films in recent years. I am not an Adam Sandler fan but that won’t put me off watching the latest from the Safdie brothers. The film focuses on a jewelry store owner who needs to find a way to pay off his debts.

US

DIRECTOR : JORDAN PEELE

CAST : LUPITA NYONG’O, WINSTON DUKE, ELISABETH MOSS

"Drive." In preparation for his role, Ryan Gosling restored the 1973 Chevy Malibu that his character uses in the film.

The most important film of 2017 was Get Out from first time filmmaker Jordan Peele who electrified audiences with his horror movie about race in America. With Get Out, Jordan Peele was succeeded where so many directors have failed. He created a film that used genre conventions and metaphor to tell a profound state of the nation story that proved hugely successful at the box office. His new film Us stars the gorgeous Lupita Nyong’o and will also be a horror movie, this time centred around a family threatened by strangers.

WAITING FOR THE BARBARIANS

DIRECTOR : CIRO GUERRA

CAST : MARK RYLANCE, JOHNNY DEPP, ROBERT PATTINSON

Columbian director Ciro Guerra is among the best filmmakers in the world and his recent films Embrace of the Serpent (2015) and Birds of Passage (2017) were both stunning achievements. Waiting for the Barbarians will be his English language debut and is an adaption of a J.M Coetzee novel. Stage legend Mark Rylance will join heart-throbs Johnny Depp and Robert Pattinson in a film focusing on colonialism.

"Guardians Of The Galaxy." Chris Pratt apparently stole his Star-Lord costume from the set, for the sole purpose of having it available so he could show up in costume to visit sick children in the hospital, who might want to meet Star-Lord.
